Engineered Stone or Natural Stone

which one fits your kitchen?

THE RIGHT CHOICE
You’re renovating your kitchen and torn between two
options that both seem excellent. On one side, engineered surfaces like Dekton promise near-indestructible durability and minimal maintenance. On the other, granite, marble and quartzite offer a natural beauty no manufacturing process can replicate exactly.

the short answer

Both materials are high quality. The right choice depends on your kitchen, your lifestyle, and what you value most. Here’s how to sort it out. At RocArtz, in Pointe-Claire, we’ve been guiding homeowners and contractors through this decision for over 20 years. We’ve installed thousands of countertops across Greater Montreal, both residential and commercial. What we see in the field is that regrets rarely come from the material itself. They come from a choice made without properly considering how the household actually lives.

Engineered Stone: Maximum Durability, Controlled Aesthetics

Dekton is the material that best illustrates what engineered stone is. It’s made from a blend of silica, feldspar, glass and quartz, subjected to extreme temperatures and very high pressure. The process mimics the transformation natural stone undergoes over thousands of years, but in just a few hours. The result is an ultra-dense, non-porous, extremely durable slab. In the kitchen, that translates into concrete, measurable benefits.
Engineered stone withstands heat up to 538°C (1000°F). You can set a pot straight off the stove on it without risking burns, discoloration, or a permanent mark. It’s one of its most appreciated strengths in busy kitchens, especially for people who cook a lot. It doesn’t fear scratches, wine stains, oil, coffee, or common cleaning products. Maintenance is limited to a wipe with soapy water. No resealing ever needed. That’s a major difference from natural stone, which requires regular attention to stay watertight.
Dekton also resists UV rays, making it an excellent choice for an outdoor terrace, a countertop near a large window, or a commercial space with heavy light exposure. On the aesthetic side, it comes in a wide range of colors and finishes. Some collections faithfully reproduce the veining of marble or the patterns of granite. Others offer uniform colors, perfect for clean, contemporary designs where visual consistency matters more than natural character.

Natural Stone: A Beauty No Technology Can Replicate

Granite, marble and quartzite are extracted directly from the earth’s crust. Every slab is a one-of-a-kind piece. The veining, color variations and crystals naturally differ from block to block. Your countertop won’t exist anywhere else, in any other kitchen. It’s this irreplaceable character that explains why natural stone remains the material of choice for many homeowners, even against technically higher-performing materials.
Granite, the timeless classic. Granite is the most widely used natural stone for kitchen countertops in Quebec, and that’s no accident. It’s sturdy, heat-resistant, and relatively easy to maintain once sealed. Annual resealing (or every two years depending on how heavily it’s used) is enough to keep it watertight and in excellent condition for decades.
Quartzite, the lesser-known choice. Quartzite is often confused with engineered quartz, but they’re two very different materials. It’s a natural stone formed from sandstone transformed under pressure, harder than granite and far more durable than marble. It combines the organic beauty and natural variation of stone with durability superior to other natural stones. For modern kitchens that want authenticity without the upkeep of marble, it’s an increasingly popular option.
